THE YOUNG ATHLETE AND HEART DISEASE - Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) in young competitive high school athletes is fortunately rare. In the United States, the #1 Recognized cause of SCD is a heart muscle disorder known as Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy or HMC. This illness, while rare,is thought to affect 1 in 500 persons of all ages. HMC usually manifests itself early in life (before age 20). This can often be insidious with no prior warning or symptoms in previously healthy young athletes.
